Applesauce Spice Cake

2 cups flour
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp. ground cloves
1/4 tsp. ground ginger
1/4 cup buttermilk, or sour milk
1/4 cup margarine or butter, softened
1 cup applesauce
1/4 cup shortening
1/2 tsp. vanilla
3 eggs

Heat oven to 350F.

In bowl, combine flour, sugar, powder, soda, and dry spices.  Add buttermilk, margarine/butter, shortening, vanilla, and applesauce.  Beat on low to medium speed until combined.  Beat 2 minutes on high speed.  Add eggs and beat 2 minutes more.

Pour into greased 9 x 13 pan.  Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until toothpick entered in center comes out clean.  Cool on wire rack.

Great with Buttercream Frosting.
